EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
