Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to recreate the unique sense of purpose he encountered as the national team coach.

Southgate suggested his intention to dedicate his efforts toward working with young people and addressing what he called a widespread pessimistic outlook presently prevalent in the country.

Pursuing Different Paths Beyond Football

During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was asked about rumors linking him with available jobs in the top flight and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Commitment to Role Models

Ahead of the publication of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, the author shared that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for teenagers, applying experiences from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader feels that his time coaching England, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Raising Children and Influencing Youth

Speaking from his experience as a father, he commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Common Ground Above Division

He asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the societal attention often centers on disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is scheduled to present deeper reflections on management and national identity drawn from his remarkable time in football.
