RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
