Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
