Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Top Place.

On the surface, this work may look more like a difficult academic quiz rather than a new popular music album from an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Split across four different movements and voiced in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning symphonic album exploring female mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, often through the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward here, buoyed by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. The pure daring by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend overly academic posturing is almost miraculous, and full praise going to the artist. Although it's not her first album to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its ambitions are much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What truly elevates this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk at her height, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart in two, the listener nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly during the stirring Italian ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, everything drops away, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top string surge thuds down with comedic force. The track immediately segues to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener never quite know—nor want to predict—what it is going to next."

Nearly every track concludes at a completely different place than how it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic work starts off moody and brooding, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Pop

A key achievement on the album involves navigating the line between bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little surprise that the album has achieved her first release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging melodies while it spirals upward. That feat gets echoed by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
