The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.
A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
