Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
