Vladimir Kramnik has broken his silence after the tragic passing of American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, calling the 29-year-old's loss as a heartbreaking event while condemning critics for mounting what he termed an "unprecedentedly cynical and unlawful campaign of harassment" against him and his loved ones.
Kramnik's Statement
The fifty-year-old former world champion, who has faced broad criticism for accusing Naroditsky of digital foul play without evidence, offered sympathies but rejected any personal attacks.
"Despite the tensions, I was the sole individual in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's obvious health issues a day before his death, publicly called for him to get assistance," Kramnik declared. "The ensuing efforts, immediately following his passing, to explicitly connect this tragic event to my name … cross all boundaries of fundamental human decency."
Kramnik said his earlier requests for examination of Naroditsky's online play had been overlooked "despite a significant amount of evidence", and stated he would provide material to "any relevant authority". He noted his lawyers were preparing civil and criminal suits over "false accusations" that have resulted in dangers against him and his family.
Police Findings
The demise of the grandmaster may have been the consequence of substance overuse and is being investigated as a possible suicide, based on a law enforcement document released Thursday. A statement from Charlotte authorities indicates Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Investigation into sudden death."
"On Sunday October 19th at approximately 07:11pm, officers responded to an assist medic call in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the document states. "When they reached the scene, an unresponsive subject was found and later declared dead by a medic."
Community Reaction
Outrage regarding Kramnik's conduct has dominated the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura called his behavior "disgusting", while reigning champion Carlsen described it as "horrible". Indian grandmaster Nihal Sarin, who played Naroditsky in his last digital game, blamed Kramnik for "causing a death", saying his self-appointed pursuit against suspected cheaters was ineffective and "totally inappropriate".
Grandmaster's Impact
A Stanford-educated prodigy and former world youth champion, Naroditsky gathered more than 800k fans on Twitch and YouTube. Referred to as Danya, he was celebrated for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a prominent figure in chess's pandemic-era boom. He was also among the globe's top competitors under shorter time controls, finishing ninth at last year's speed chess title event in New York.
Naroditsky repeatedly refuted the allegations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his mental health. "Since the Kramnik controversy, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people suspect foul play," Naroditsky remarked in his final livestream.
Official Responses
The World Chess Federation announced recently it was "investigating" Kramnik's actions. "Kramnik's methodology simply is unacceptable," Fide CEO Sutovsky commented. The federation plans to honor Naroditsky with a tribute prize.
Fide president Arkady Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's official remarks about Naroditsky, prior to and following his passing, would be referred to the federation's disciplinary body "to be reviewed independently".
"Life and human worth are core principles universally upheld," Dvorkovich emphasized. "Our global chess family has long respected the accomplishments of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such status brings a responsibility to maintain the standards of fairness and respect."
Loved Ones' Wish
Naroditsky's relatives have expressed they hope he is remembered not for the confrontation he faced but for "the happiness and motivation he brought people every day". Magnus Carlsen described him "an asset to chess", while Hikaru Nakamura described him as "the best of us".
